Wolong Panda Center, located deep inside the Wolong National Nature Reserve, is a longer journey from Chengdu — but it is truly worth it. Compared with panda bases closer to the city, Wolong is less crowded, more nature-oriented, and widely recognized as one of the most authentic habitats connected to wild panda conservation.

This one-day tour is ideal for responsible panda lovers and nature enthusiasts. Beyond joining the volunteer program with professional guidance, you will also enjoy several exclusive experiences: a gentle mountain walk with locals, a rural farmhouse visit, and a special opportunity to plant bamboo for the pandas — leaving a meaningful contribution that continues beyond your travel day.

Due to government regulations and for panda protection, direct contact with pandas is not permitted in any volunteer activities. The exact schedule and tasks are subject to the panda base’s daily arrangements.

Step into the Role of a Panda Keeper for a Day

At the end of the program, receive a special certificate to commemorate your meaningful day at the panda base.

Plant Bamboo for Pandas — and Receive Growth Updates

Join local villagers to plant bamboo saplings in the mountain forests. You will receive growth photos as your bamboo flourishes — and one day, it may become part of the pandas’ diet.

🗺️ Itinerary Quick Look

6:30 am — Chengdu to Wolong (Approx. 2.5 Hours)

Your guide will meet you at your hotel in Chengdu early in the morning. You will then set out on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to Wolong.

Arrive at Wolong Panda Center at around 9:00 am, where your special day as a panda volunteer begins. With the support of experienced staff and your professional guide, you will gain deeper insight into panda conservation and contribute to their daily care.

9:00 am — Morning Volunteer Activities (Approx. 3 Hours)

Work alongside panda keepers to:

• break bamboo and wash bamboo shoots

• clean the glass of panda enclosures

• observe panda feeding at close distance

Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing walk inside the base. Your guide will introduce the stories behind individual pandas and explain how conservation work is carried out in this reserve.

12:00 pm — Afternoon Volunteer Activities (Approx. 2 Hours)

Enjoy a communal lunch at the staff canteen, followed by a documentary screening about the panda life cycle and conservation efforts.

Then, continue with hands-on experiences:

• make panda cakes

• chop bamboo leaves for elderly pandas

At the end of the volunteer program, you will receive your panda keeper certificate as a meaningful souvenir.

The program typically concludes around 2:00 pm.

2:30 pm — Farmhouse Visit & Bamboo Planting (Approx. 2.5 Hours)

Step into a local farmhouse in Wolong Town and discover rural life in the mountains — from seasonal vegetable plots to traditional cured meats hanging under the eaves.

Then enjoy a gentle hike into the forest behind the town, where you will plant your own bamboo seedling. As it grows, we will provide photo updates of its progress. Eventually, the bamboo will be supplied to the panda base, becoming part of the pandas’ food supply.

5:00 pm — Wolong to Chengdu (Approx. 2.5 Hours)

Your meaningful day concludes around 5:00 pm. Your guide and driver will escort you back to Chengdu, arriving at your hotel at around 7:30 pm.
